How Old Is Your Zippo Lighter?
Every genuine Zippo windproof lighter has a date code stamped on the bottom. This tells you exactly when your lighter was manufactured — making it invaluable for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The date-coding system was introduced in the mid-1950s, originally for quality control. It has since become one of the most celebrated features among the global Zippo collecting community, including the growing community of Indian collectors.
The Current Date Code System (2000–Present)
Zippo uses a letter + two-digit number combination:
- Letter (A–L) = month: A=Jan, B=Feb, C=Mar, D=Apr, E=May, F=Jun, G=Jul, H=Aug, I=Sep, J=Oct, K=Nov, L=Dec
- Two-digit number = year of manufacture (e.g. 24 = 2024)
Example: A stamp reading "E 19" means the lighter was made in May 2019.
Earlier Date Code Systems
1986–1999
Roman numerals were used for the year (I = 1986, II = 1987 … XIV = 1999), combined with a dot system indicating the month.
1955–1985
Slash marks (vertical lines on each side of the ZIPPO stamp) indicated the year and quarter of manufacture.
Before 1955 (1933–mid-1950s)
Lighters are dated by their style, model, and patent markings. The "Zippo" wordmark on the bottom also changed over the decades — from block capital letters (1933–1954) to the script logo (mid-1950s onwards).

Why Date Codes Matter for Indian Collectors
The manufacture date significantly affects the collectible value of a Zippo lighter. Vintage lighters from key decades — especially 1940s (wartime steel cases), 1950s, and limited editions — command premium prices in India's growing collector market. Always verify the bottom stamp when buying or selling pre-owned Zippo lighters.
